Welcome to Birth by Design! As a part of our four year anniversary celebration, we are launching our official blog! Here you’ll find doula bios, commentary on what’s happening in the world of birthing and parenting, information and resources, and, of course, support and empathy! Of course, you can always find information about us at our website, birthbydesigndoulas.com, but this will be a place of humor, sarcasm and informality. We love each other, we love the women we serve, we love what we do, and we hope to share a glimpse into that passion through this blog.
Who are we? We are the premier doula agency serving the Central Arkansas area. We are a one-stop-shop for birth doulas, postpartum doulas, lactation professionals, and any other services or support you need for pregnancy, birth, and beyond! We support and empower women of all backgrounds and beliefs to find and trust their instincts to birth and mother their babies in confidence.
Which brings us to this… our founder, CEO and fearless leader- Nicolle Sherrie Fletcher! Nicolle has been working as a birth doula since 2009. She believes that women are best served when they have a community to rely on, so she founded Birth by Design to fill the need for women to have access to local doulas in Conway in 2012. She says this about her decision to become a doula, “My initial goal was to become a midwife, but I decided to be a doula over a midwife because the majority of women will choose to birth in the hospital thinking they will have continuous labor support and the reality is, that they will not. I love supporting women to birth at home but the truth is more women will birth their babies in the hospital and they need to know their options, have their questions answered, and ultimately not feel like they are apart of a mechanical system.”
Since then, BbD has expanded to include offices in Little Rock, and Cabot, with doulas in those areas able to serve the needs of the women in the communities they live in. Nicolle is always challenging herself and her team to greater excellence and professionalism. Her favorite part about being a doula is “empowering women to birth in whatever way they feel most comfortable. I love providing information and supporting women to literally find their own path to motherhood!”
Her sister doulas adore her. One of them put it beautifully, “Working with Nicolle seeps into your soul and impacts how you care for people from there forward. She breathes confidence into mamas, daddies, and students of every kind. Her reputation for twirling cool washcloths, rebozo magic, and essential oil dousing often precedes her, but every birth is different. Sometimes the only tools she uses are her words and arms, or, undoubtedly, a soft and quite ample bosom!” (If you haven’t had a bosom hug from Nicolle, you don’t know what you’re missing!) She is known for her jingly Dancing for Birth skirts and her infectious laugh. She’s taught us the difference between a “good birth bra” and a “date night bra”. She has the talent for knowing just what a client needs physically, and is strong and steady enough to hold up a laboring woman in a full dangle squat to let gravity do its work! She is beautiful and outgoing, strong and intelligent.
More about Nicolle than you ever wanted to know, in her own words…
